The Melodic Rise of Johannes Pietsch: From Vienna and Dubai to Eurovision Glory

When Johannes Pietsch—internationally known by his stage name JJ—took the grand stage at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025, he wasn’t just performing a song; he was bridging two seemingly disparate musical worlds. Blending the dramatic heights of classical opera with the infectious energy of modern pop, Pietsch captured the hearts of millions across Europe and beyond, rewriting history books in the process.

Early Roots and Global Influences

Born in Vienna on April 29, 2001, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch’s multicultural background profoundly shaped his artistic identity. While he spent his early life in Vienna, the majority of his childhood was rooted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

It was in Dubai that his musical education quietly began. Family gatherings featured lively pop karaoke sessions, introducing him to the vibrant rhythms of popular music, while his father introduced him to the sweeping, emotional grandeur of opera. This unusual duality laid the foundation for his signature vocal styling. In 2016, his family returned to Vienna, setting the stage for Pietsch to pursue formal training. He honed his craft at the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera before continuing his studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Stepping Into the Spotlight

Pietsch’s television breakthrough came in 2020 when he auditioned for the ninth series of The Voice UK (after missing the application deadline for the German edition). Under the mentorship of will.i.am, he advanced all the way to the knockout rounds. Eager to test his momentum closer to home, he competed in the fifth season of Austria’s long-running talent showcase Starmania in 2021, reaching the initial final stages.

These television appearances served as a springboard, preparing him for the biggest opportunity of his career. On January 30, 2025, Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that Pietsch would represent Austria at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Wasted Love”, which he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and Thomas Thurner.

A Historic Eurovision Triumph

When Pietsch performed “Wasted Love” on May 17, 2025, in the contest’s grand final, his soaring vocals and striking pop-opera fusion captivated both the international juries and home viewers. He clinched a stunning victory with a total of 436 points—dominating the jury vote with 258 points and securing 178 points from the public televote.

The victory was groundbreaking on multiple fronts. Pietsch became the first solo Eurovision champion born in the 21st century, as well as the first winner in the contest’s history of Southeast Asian descent. His technical prowess as a sopranist—utilizing a countertenor range that reaches into high soprano territory—brought a fresh, avant-garde classical sensibility back to the Eurovision stage.

Continuing the Journey

Following his monumental Eurovision win, Pietsch’s career rapidly expanded. He collected fan-voted accolades at the Eurovision Awards—including honors for Outstanding Vocals and Album Cover of the Year for a memorable mashup with Austrian Eurovision icon Conchita Wurst—and embarked on promotional tours under his “Into the Unknown” project.

Outside of his music, Pietsch has embraced his platform to speak openly about his identity as a queer artist, expressing a desire to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Blending linguistic fluency in German, English, and Tagalog with an expansive musical range, Johannes Pietsch continues to carve out a unique space in contemporary pop culture, proving that classical training and modern pop can coexist in spectacular fashion.
