How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify Easily

Whether you have rare live boots, unreleased demos, or original tracks you produced yourself, you don’t have to limit your listening experience to Spotify’s official catalog.

Adding your own audio files to Spotify depends on your end goal: listening privately on your personal devices or publishing tracks worldwide as an artist.

Method 1: Add Local Files (For Personal Listening)

If you want to play audio files (MP3, M4P, or MP4) stored on your hard drive alongside your regular Spotify playlists, use the Local Files feature. Note that this capability requires the Spotify Desktop App on Windows or Mac (the web player does not support local files).

Step 1: Enable Local Files on Desktop

  1. Open the Spotify application on your PC or Mac.
  2. Click your Profile Icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Local Files section.
  4. Toggle on Show Local Files.
  5. By default, Spotify shows tracks from your Downloads and iTunes/Music folders. To select a custom folder, click Add a Source and select the folder where your audio files are stored.

Once enabled, a new Local Files folder will appear under Your Library on the left menu bar containing all imported audio tracks.

Step 2: Sync Local Files to Mobile (iPhone & Android)

To listen to those local tracks on your phone, you must sync them from your computer:

  1. Create a Playlist: On your computer, open Spotify, right-click the tracks in your Local Files folder, and add them to a new or existing playlist.
  2. Enable Audio Permissions on Mobile:
    • Open the Spotify app on your phone.
    • Tap your Profile Picture $rightarrow$ Settings and privacy $rightarrow$ Apps and devices.
    • Toggle on Local audio files (and grant permissions if prompted).
  3. Connect to the Same Wi-Fi: Ensure both your computer and phone are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Download the Playlist: Open the created playlist on your phone app and tap the Download icon (downward arrow). The songs will sync to your phone for offline playback.

Method 2: Distribute Music (For Independent Artists & Creators)

If you are a musician or podcaster looking to publish music to Spotify so anyone can stream it globally, you cannot upload files directly. Spotify requires artists to release music through an approved digital music distributor.

Key Steps to Publish Worldwide:

  1. Choose a Distributor: Pick a music distribution service based on your budget and strategy:
    • DistroKid: Popular for unlimited uploads on an annual subscription model.
    • TuneCore / CD Baby: Great options for pay-per-release models or revenue splits.
    • Landr / Amuse / Ditto: Alternative distributors with flexible plans.
  2. Prepare Master Files & Artwork: Export your music in high-quality WAV format ($16text{-bit}$ or $24text{-bit}$, $44.1text{ kHz}$) and prepare cover art ($3000 times 3000$ pixels, JPEG/PNG).
  3. Upload Metadata: Upload your files to your distributor’s dashboard, fill out track titles, artist names, genre, and metadata.
  4. Claim Spotify for Artists: Once your first release is processed, claim your profile at artists.spotify.com to customize your profile, pitch upcoming releases to Spotify editorial playlists, and track analytics.

Troubleshooting Common Local File Issues

  • File Format Issues: Spotify primarily supports .mp3, .m4p, and .mp4 audio files. Lossless .flac or DRM-protected files will not play or import.
  • Mobile Sync Fails: Ensure both devices are on the exact same Wi-Fi frequency ($2.4text{ GHz}$ vs $5text{ GHz}$ mismatches often cause sync errors) and turn off any active VPNs on both devices.
  • Grayed-Out Tracks: If tracks turn gray on desktop, the original audio files on your hard drive were likely moved, renamed, or deleted.
