Before the Spotlight: The Quiet, Artistic Roots of Song Kang

Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captured hearts worldwide in sweeping romances and dark thrillers, Song Kang was just a regular young man navigating ordinary teenage uncertainties in Suwon, South Korea.

Exploring what life looked like for the global star before fame reveals a surprisingly grounded backstory—one defined by creative households, near-misses with K-pop stardom, and a quiet, persistent grind toward his true calling.

Grown in a Creative Atmosphere

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a household deeply tied to the arts. Creativity wasn’t just a hobby for his family; it was a daily baseline. His father was an artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher.

Despite being surrounded by athleticism and music, Song Kang didn’t grow up with an immediate, rigid blueprint to become a celebrity. During his school years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, he explored various interests. Like many teenagers, he spent his free time playing video games, listening to music, reading, and keeping a relatively low profile. However, his artistic DNA quietly surfaced in other ways—he picked up a natural talent for playing the piano, a skill he still enjoys today.

The K-pop Scouts He Left Behind

As he grew into his signature striking visuals, Hollywood-esque proportions, and towering height (186 cm / 6’1″), the entertainment industry naturally took notice.

During the peak booms of K-pop trainee casting, talent scouts repeatedly approached Song Kang, trying to recruit him to become a pop idol. For many young Koreans, a direct casting call from a major music label is an open door to instant training systems. Yet, Song Kang turned them down.

Though he loved music, he realized his heart didn’t belong on a concert stage holding a microphone as an idol. Instead, he wanted to evoke raw, complex human emotions through acting and storytelling. Inspired by legendary actors—notably pointing to Leonardo DiCaprio as an early cinematic inspiration—Song Kang decided to commit fully to the craft of film and television. He went on to major in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, a prestigious alma mater known for producing many of South Korea’s top-tier actors.

The Pre-Debut Grind and Stepping Stones (2017–2018)

Song Kang’s transition into professional acting wasn’t an overnight fairy tale. When he signed with his long-time agency, Namoo Actors, he had to work his way up through standard auditions and minor supporting gigs.

Before landing the breakout streaming roles that changed his life, his pre-fame and early debut era included several diverse stepping stones:

  • Official Acting Debut (2017): He made his television debut in the tvN romance-comedy The Liar and His Lover, playing a sweet-natured supporting role as a band drummer named Baek Jin-woo. Later that year, he secured a spot in the weekend family drama Man in the Kitchen.
  • Music Video Cameos: Before he was the leading man on screen, his distinct look made him a favorite for narrative music videos, appearing in indie and ballad tracks for artists like The ADE and Suran.
  • Variety and Hosting Exposure: To build public familiarity, Song Kang stepped out of his comfort zone. In 2018, he became a fixed MC for the popular weekly music show Inkigayo alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon. He also joined the quirky mystery variety show Village Survival, the Eight, where working alongside seasoned stars like Yoo Jae-suk helped shed his shy image and showcase his easygoing, charmingly clumsy personality.

From Ordinary to Icon

Looking back at the pre-stardom chapters of Song Kang’s life highlights a journey of intentional choices. By turning down shortcuts to pop idol fame and choosing the harder, winding road of theatrical training, he laid a solid foundation.
