The Boy Behind the Screen: Growing Up as Song Kang

Before he was crowned the “Son of Netflix” and captured millions of hearts in global hits like Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a quiet kid growing up in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

While his striking visuals and effortless on-screen charisma might make it seem like he was destined for the spotlight from birth, Song Kang’s childhood and youth tell a much more grounded story. It was a journey shaped by an athletic household, unexpected creative sparks, and a surprisingly slow-burn path to stardom.

A Household of Art and Athletics

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a family of four alongside his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. His home environment was a unique blend of physical discipline and artistic expression.

  • The Athlete Father: Athleticism is practically coded into Song Kang’s DNA. His father was an artistic gymnast, and fitness has been a staple in his family lineage (with extended family members also diving into sports like wrestling). This active background laid the foundation for the actor’s famously robust physique and love for working out.
  • The Musical Mother: Balancing out the physical rigor, his mother worked as a piano teacher. This exposed Song Kang to music and arts early on, sparking a lifelong hobby of playing the piano and giving him a quiet, sensitive appreciation for aesthetics.

Interestingly, even his name carries a personal touch. His father originally wanted to name him Song Kang-geun, but eventually settled on the sleek and simple Song Kang.

Architectural Dreams and Creative Ambitions

Long before he ever thought about memorizing scripts or stepping onto a television set, a young Song Kang had entirely different career aspirations. Growing up, after seeing striking photographs of architectural masterpieces and stylish interiors, he dreamed of becoming an architect or a furniture designer.

However, his practical streak got the better of him. In past interviews, he confessed that he eventually let go of the dream because he simply had “no idea where he needed to start”. Instead, he spent his school years—attending Songpa Middle School and later Changhyun High School—navigating ordinary teenage life, figuring out his future step-by-step.

The Titanic Moment That Changed Everything

The turning point that planted the seed for his acting career came from Hollywood rather than local K-dramas. As a teenager, Song Kang watched Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Captivated by DiCaprio’s intense emotional range, screen presence, and the sheer power of storytelling, a young Song Kang experienced a rare epiphany: I want to evoke those kinds of emotions in people.

That single cinematic inspiration shifted his trajectory. He decided to pursue the craft seriously, eventually enrolling in Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts—walking the very same academic halls as other future stars like BTS’s Jin.

Turning Down K-Pop for the Silver Screen

Because of his towering height (1.86m / 6’1″) and arresting visuals, talent scouts naturally took notice. Before making his official acting debut, Song Kang was approached multiple times by K-pop agencies offering him the chance to train as an idol.

In an era where many aspiring young Koreans jump at the chance to join idol groups, Song Kang turned them down. He knew his heart belonged strictly to acting. He wanted to build characters, explore human psychology through reading mystery novels, and master his craft on stage and screen—a gamble that ultimately paid off when he made his official debut in 2017.

From a Quiet Kid to a Global Icon

Looking back at Song Kang’s childhood and youth reveals a stark contrast to the larger-than-life characters he plays today. Far from being an outgoing extrovert chasing fame from day one, he was a thoughtful, multi-faceted young man who dabbled in everything from Kendo and piano to video games and quiet drives.
